The number of people looking towards earning a living from the internet is on the rise. However, as an individual, you stand a better chance if you work on online niche marketing rather than competing with the established companies in general broad markets. There are various explanations why online niche marketing is preferred if you are still new to making money online.

As a first, it is more probable that you can succeed. You are running a one man show and the market needs to be tight and small enough for you to be able to customize solutions to meet the needs of your potential customers. Also, being in a narrow market basically wipes out competition from the big boys.

With a proper customer base built from your online niche marketing efforts, you need not act like the huge companies, running on razor thin profits and resorting to drastic and dynamic changes. You can afford to add your personal touch to your business, build rapport with your customers and they will be loyal to you. If you have chosen the right niche, it is quite likely that you can become the authority figure that they will come to when they need products or product recommendations.

Still, there are some key points to take note of when you do online niche marketing. The first step is to identify the target niche, followed by doing enough research to get a good idea of the lingo the community uses. You need to understand what they want, what are their needs, and what are the top 10 questions or problems they always face. Learn these from forums and you are quite safe.

These communities also serve another important function, when it comes to online niche marketing. They increase your base of contacts who will become your potential customers. See if you can narrow your area down further, but know when to stop. You have to have a market to target, after all!

Never downplay customer support and satisfaction. Since your market is small, it does not take long for your bad reputation to be made known to all the users. Such communities are often tightly knitted. One unhappy customer can spread the word to ten others and it is really no good for your business. Take care of after-sales service and do not take it for granted. Plan to receive and act upon feedback or customer enquiries. Provide long term support so that they are not left stranded. On the other hand, if you do well in these, your happy customers will spread the word about you and this is important in online niche marketing.

You will have to make initial investments, too, as well as put in a lot of time an effort, into the product you are selling, designing the website, search engine optimization - the list goes on. It will take time before you get the returns you want, but when you do, it will be worth it.
